Celtic Pipes and Drums

History

Founded in 1972 by members from the legendary Chrysler Band, the Celtic Pipes and Drums is committed to promoting the traditional music of the Great Highland Bagpipes. Throughout its history the band has been honored to play for governors, presidents, princes, and other dignitaries. Now, in its 38th year, it is a “street band,” playing local parades and concerts for the enjoyment of members and audiences alike. Though having competed in the past, the band is now primarily non-competition oriented. Many members are solo competitors, and some also compete with other bands. Income earned supports equipment and uniform needs. Currently, the Celtic Pipes and Drums has members ranging from 13 to 84 years of age.

There are no auditions, though there are tune requirements for all members (pipers and drummers alike). “Dressing” for the street is at the discretion of the Pipe Major.

Private lessons can be arranged. Uniforms are provided, as are the drums (pipers supply their own pipes). The band will issue a chanter to those pipers ready for the street.

The band is often seen in parades, concerts, and golf tournaments throughout the Detroit Metropolitan area. For more information about joining or hiring the band please call 248.684.2822, or send an email to the attention of the band manager grtait1@comcast.net.

Practices

For over 30 years the Birmingham Chrysler Jeep dealership in Troy, Michigan has sponsored the band, providing it with practice space. The Celtics proudly represent the dealership in the following local parades: Celebrate Birmingham, Royal Oak’s Memorial Day, and Clawson’s Fourth of July.

Practices are held most Tuesdays from 7:30 to 9 pm, and weather permitting, include outdoor marching. Members are required to attend 65% of practices during the year. Drummer-only practices are sometimes held at additional locations to facilitate travel and member schedules.

Feel free to stop in any time, although you may wish to call the band manager at 248.684.2822 before doing so to insure there will be practice that week.
